Stacey Abrams honored at Stone Mountain church

Stacey Abrams was honored with a Trailblazer Award at the Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church in Stone Mountain on Sunday morning, as the church recognized women of DeKalb County during National Women's History Month.

Others honored with "Women On The Move Awards" included DeKalb NAACP President Teresa Hardy, On Common Ground News publisher Valerie Morgan and DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson.

Abrams told churchgoers about her narrow defeat in the November election when she was the Democratic candidate for governor, saying that it has created new opportunities for her. "Opportunity too often looks like work," she said. "That's why we miss it."

Abrams is the founder and chair of Fair Fight, an organization dedicated to ending voter suppression. She pointed to increased voter participation in the 2018 elections during her appearance at the church.

Abrams has said she will soon announce whether she will run for election to the U.S. Senate. Congressman John Lewis recently told CNN that Abrams, former minority leader in the Georgia House, would "be a great voice and a great leader in the Senate."

Abrams has said she is not interested in serving as a running mate for former Vice President Joe Biden, a potential Democratic presidential candidate.
