Attorney Ray Smith III has been reappointed to the Stone Mountain Memorial Association by Governor Brian Kemp. The apppintment was announced on Nov. 4.
Smith is the chairman of the association, according to its web site. Association member Carolyn Meadows was organization's chairman when the association met in September. Meadows was elected the president of the National Rifle Association earlier this year. She is also a vice chairman of the American Conservative Union.
Smith was vice chairman at when the SMMA met in September. At that meeting, the SMMA voted to bar shareable dockable devices from the park.
The next SMMA board meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the association's operations and planning offices.
The Memorial Association is spending more than $600,000 on improvements at the top of the mountain. These include replacement of the heating and air-conditioning system, new doors and protective barriers.
It is also mulling bids from contractors for renovations and improvements to the Stone Mountain Park Campgrounds, including campsire construction and improvements, tree removal, paving and resurfacing, renovations, drainage work and plumbing and electrical repairs.
The mission of the association is "to sustain, enhance and protect Stone Mountain Park and providing enriching historical, natural, cultural and recreational experiences for all who visit."
The 3,600-acre park is one of the area's most popular tourist attractions.
