The DeKalb Board of Registration & Elections voted Thursday to cooperate with outside consultants hired by the county's Board of Commissioners to assess the operations of the election board.
After hearing complaints about irregularities during the 2018 general election, county commissioners voted unanimously in March asking the county's "Chief Audit Executive to Add an Operational Review to Include a Fiscal and Performance Audit of the DeKalb County Voter Registration and Elections Department."
Commissioners said the audit should include a review of how voter registration applications are handled and the procedures for handling voter irregularities.
"Given the overwhelming turnout during the 2018 election and with a 2020 Presidential Election, does the department see a need to request additional funding to ensure that the County has sufficient locations to serve all of its voters?," commissioners asked.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the election board has been resisting the audit and even after Thursday's vote wanted to negotiate the timing of the consultants' visit.
"I certainly would like to know who they are, what they're going to do, and have some conversation with them before they show up," the newspaper quoted Elections Board Chairman Samuel Tillman as saying.
The next meeting of the elections board is scheduled for February 13 at 4:30 p.m. at 4380 Memorial Dr.
